Common questions

How long will it take to reach a specific retirement number?

Switch to "Reach a dollar goal" above, enter your target amount, and this works backward from your current savings, monthly contribution, and expected return to tell you the age you'll hit it.

How is my retirement projection calculated?

This grows your current savings plus every future monthly contribution at your expected annual return, compounded monthly until your retirement age. The 4% rule then estimates a sustainable yearly withdrawal from that final balance.

What are the 2026 401(k) and IRA contribution limits?

For 2026, the 401(k) employee limit is $24,500 (or $32,500 with the $8,000 catch-up if you're 50+, and $35,750 for ages 60 to 63 under the higher catch-up). The IRA limit is $7,500, or $8,600 for those 50 and older.

What does coast FIRE mean?

Coast FIRE is the point where your current savings alone, with no further contributions, will grow to a full retirement nest egg by your target age through compound growth. Try setting your monthly contribution to $0 above to see your own coast FIRE projection.

What's the best way to catch up if I'm behind on retirement savings?

If you're 50 or older, use the catch-up contribution limits above to put in more than the standard cap. Otherwise, raising your monthly contribution even slightly compounds significantly over time, especially the earlier you increase it.
