How Much Federal Income Tax Will I Pay? (Take-Home Pay Guide)

Short answer: Your federal tax depends on your yearly income, your filing status, and the standard deduction. The US uses marginal brackets, so each slice of your income is taxed at its own rate. Enter your income and filing status in the calculator to see your estimated tax, effective rate, and take-home pay per paycheck.

How federal tax brackets work

Many people think a higher bracket means all their income is taxed at a higher rate. That is not how it works. Income is split into slices. The first slice is taxed at the lowest rate, the next slice at a higher rate, and so on. Only the dollars inside each slice get that slice's rate.

The 2026 federal brackets are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. Before brackets apply, the standard deduction lowers the income that is taxed.

How to use the tax calculator, step by step

  1. Enter your annual gross income (before tax).
  2. Pick your filing status: Single, Married Filing Jointly, or Head of Household.
  3. Choose your pay frequency: weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly.
  4. Add your state income tax rate if you want a fuller estimate. Leave it blank for federal only.
  5. Read your estimated tax, effective rate, and take-home pay per paycheck.

What the estimate leaves out

The calculator uses the standard deduction and does not itemize. It does not include credits, retirement contributions, health plan costs, local taxes, or payroll items such as Social Security and Medicare. Your real paycheck can differ. Use the result for planning, then check with a tax professional or the IRS website for your exact case.

Frequently asked questions

How much of my paycheck goes to federal income tax?

It depends on your income, filing status, and deductions. Federal tax is marginal, so only the part of your income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. The tax calculator estimates it for you.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your total income, and it is always lower.

What is take-home pay?

Take-home pay is what you receive after taxes are removed from your gross pay.

Does moving into a higher bracket cut my whole paycheck?

No. Only the income above the bracket line is taxed at the higher rate.
